Programme of Study

KS3

YEAR 7

COLOUR, PATTERN and ABSTRACTION

This is a new scheme of work for 2018/19. It has been put together to reflect the need to concentrate on skill building at KS3, with a focus on OBSERVATION DRAWING and PAINTING. It reflects the need to work from ‘the formal elements’, in this case COLOUR and PATTERN. We will begin by looking at objects from India and Pakistan, drawing from them in a variety of materials and techniques. Students will also look at the work of Henri Matisse and Patrick Heron before embarking on a painting. To further extend the theme we will explore either Textiles or Printmaking later in the year.

YEAR 8

TONE, TEXTURE, SHAPE and FORM

This is a new scheme of work for 2018/19. It has been put together to reflect the emphasis on DRAWING and ANNOTATION in the new GCSE course, this will extend on SKILL BUILDING started in Year 7.

Year 8 will explore Tonal Observation Drawing and ‘Drawing for Purpose’ as mentioned in AQA GCSE Course. The focus will be on PORTRAITURE, informed by the work of KATHE KOLLWITZ. Students will go on to explore the notion of ‘Style’ in a variety of artists work as they experiment with material and process to explore drawing aspects of the human face. Later on we will look at CUBISM, with a focus on PICASSO, this will further compliment explorations into Abstraction started in YEAR 7. The theme will continue to extend over the year.

YEAR 9

DEVELOPMENT AND PERSONAL RESPONSE

‘MYSELF’

This is scheme of work has been modified from a GCSE project; it was decided to introduce this level of work in year 9 to mirror other schools who start GCSE courses at this time. It brings together everything learned at KS3, and further explores formal elements of COMPOSITION and ‘PICTURE MAKING’ as well as DEVELOPMENT and PERSONAL RESPONSE from the GCSE syllabus. The theme of ‘MYSELF’ is used as it is question which regularly appears on GCSE exam papers. The students experiment with collage, drawing and painting. ‘Pop Art’ is introduced through the work of Derek Boshier, we then go on to look at the 1980’s New York group of artists including Keith Haring, Kenny Scarf and Jean Michel Basquiat.
